For a few weeks I found that my iPhone battery was draining very quickly, and at times the phone was getting hot and losing juice when not apparently in use.
Killing applications and restarting seemed to help a bit, but the problem always came back. Even when it was in my pocket I would suddenly find the phone uncomfortably and worryingly hot for no good reason.
However, I think I have found the cause and the solution.
When I went into Contacts I found that they were not synchronised with iCloud, and that the web access symbol kept spinning again and again. This was the cause of the usage, I assume the sync was stuck on some contact and repeatedly trying. Thank god I wasn't data roaming!
The solution was simple:
1.Exported all my iPhone contacts using My Contacts Backup.
2.Deleted all contacts from iPhone and iCloud.
3.Broke the synchronisation link.
4.Re-imported the backed up contacts to the iPhone.
5.Recreated the iCloud synchronisation link.
Bingo, all contacts intact and synchronising correctly without chewing my battery. I have no idea what caused the initial problem, but it hasn't recurred in several weeks.
